Jesus seems unnecessarily harsh with His mother here. But is He?
Is this simply akin to saying ‘what do you want’ in a very direct way?
What the text does show is that Jesus did listen to her, and He did see the need, and consequety He went on to fulfil the request (to do something about the lack of wine at the wedding feast)
That shows me that He acted with compassion. He saw the need and responded to it – without drawing attention to Himself.
He realised that the bridegroom’s family would have been highly embarrassed – probably ridiculed or even ostracised – because of their failure to fulfil the societal obigation for proving an adequate feast.
John’s gosplel (Jn 2:11) writes
Jesus thus revealed His glory, and His disciples put their faith in Him.
Jesus’ signs and wonders – even today- help people to put their faith in Him. It might be an instant decision (conversion) but it is simply the beginning of the journey of discipleship. Jesus’ disciples continued to journey with Him. We do too.
